ไม้ยืนต้นขนาดเล็ก สูงถึง ๑๐ ม. ใบเดี่ยว เรียงสลับ รูปรีถึงรูปไข่ ดอกแยกเพศ ดอกออกเป็นช่อจากลำต้นหรือกิ่งที่ไม่มีใบ ดอกสีเขียวอ่อน ผลรูปรี มีเนื้อนุ่มฉํ่านํ้า สีเขียว เมื่อสุกเปลี่ยนเป็นสีเหลือง มีเมล็ดแข็ง ออกดอกช่วงเดือนเมษายน – พฤษภาคม ขยายพันธุ์โดยการปักชำกิ่ง หรือต้น และเพาะเมล็ด

Characteristics :

Melientha sauvis is a small tree, up to 10 m tall. Leaves simple, alternate, elliptic to ovate. Inflorescences are solilary or in clusters of racemes, on stem or leafless branches, with green flower. Fruits are a drupe, ellipsoid, with a fleshy mesocarp, green and turning yellow at maturity. Flowering in April – May. This plant can be propagated by stem and branch cutting or seed.

ประโยชน์ :

ยอดอ่อนและใบอ่อนนำมาทำต้มจืดหรือใส่แกงผักหวานปลาแห้ง อย่างไรก็ตามมีพืชอีกชนิดหนึ่งชื่อว่า ผักหวานเมา เสน หรือแก้กอง ซึ่งมีพิษ มีลักษณะคล้ายกับผักหวานป่ามาก และพบในพื้นที่เดียวกัน จึงทำให้เก็บพืชผิดชนิดบ่อยครั้ง

Uses and Utilization :

The young shoots and young leaves are cooked in soup or dried fish curry. However, this plant is often mistaken with the highly similar which is poisonous species, Urobotrya siamensis. They are also in the same ecological habitat.
