ไม้ยืนต้นขนาดใหญ่ สูง 12-20 ซม. เปลือกเรียบเป็นหลุมตื้นสีเทาอ่อน ใบเดี่ยว รูปไข่กว้างแกมรี กว้าง 3-6 ซม. ยาว 6-9 ซม. ปลายใบแหลม โคนใบเกือบมน ท้องใบมักมีขนรูปดาว ดอกสีม่วงอมชมพู ออกเป็นช่อตามยอด ยาว 6-10 ซม. มักแตกแขนง ดอกตูมขนาด 10-12 มม. รูปป้อมและมีขนสีน้ำตาลแดงปกคลุมแน่นหนา ดอกบานเต็มที่กว้าง 4.5 ซม. กลีบรองดอกเป็นรูปถ้วย ปลายแยก 6 แฉก กลีบดอก 6 กลีบ หลุดร่วงง่าย รูปกลมแกมไข่กลับ ขอบกลีบเป็นคลื่น เกสรผู้จำนวนมาก มี 4-6 อัน ยาวและหนากว่าอันอื่นๆ เกสรเมียยาวกว่าเกสรผู้ รังไข่รูปทรงกลมมีขน ผลรูปไข่แกมขอบขนาน ส่วนปลายมีขนหนาแน่น แก่แล้วแตก

Tree, 12-20 m high; bark glabrous with shallow dimples, pale grey. Leaves simple broadly ovate to ovate-elliptic, 6-9 cm long by 3-6 cm wide, lower surface pubescent. Inflorescence terminal panicle, 6-10 cm long, branched. Flowers purplish-pink, ca 4.5 cm across; bud densely ferrugineous tomentose; calyx 6, campanulate, with acute lobes; corolla 6 orbicular or obovate, clawed, undulate at margin, caducous; stamens many, with 4-6 thicker and longer than others; ovary densely tomentose, subglobose; style longer than stamens. Fruit capsule, oblong-ovoid, densely tomentose at the top.

พบขึ้นตามป่าดิบและป่าผลัดใบใกล้ริมห้วยตั้งแต่ภาคเหนือถึงภาคตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของประเทศไทย
